Barcelona, Spain, Jun 26 (EFE).- Ilkay Gundogan has been confirmed as Barcelona’s latest signing, the club announced Monday.
The German midfielder arrives at the Camp Nou after his contract expired at Manchester City, where he won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, two Community Shields and the Champions League as part of a treble last season.
“So happy to join this amazing club,” Gundogan said on Twitter. “Can’t wait to get this new chapter started.”
Hours earlier, he bade farewell to City and the club’s fans, thanking them for their support throughout his seven years at the Etihad Stadium.
“You made me realize all my dreams. I will carry you forever in my heart. Once a blue, always a blue!”
The former Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04 and Nurnberg playmaker was one of manager Xavi Hernandez’s priority signings to bolster Barca’s midfield, which has just lost lynchpin Sergio Busquets after his transfer to Inter Miami, where he will play alongside Lionel Messi.
Xavi hopes Gundogan’s experience will help further improve youngster Pedri, who has already cemented his place in the Barca and Spain sides. EFE
