Madrid, Oct 6 (EFE).- Students at a male-only residential college dormitory in Madrid have come under widespread condemnation extending as high as the Spanish prime minister after a video of them singing a sexist song in a choreographed performance went viral on social media.
The video, filmed on Sunday night, showed students at the Colegio Mayor Elías Ahuja, a Catholic-run residency for students of the capital’s Complutense University, directing a bile-laden and sexually expletive song from their windows at female students residing in the Colegio Mayor Santa Mónica directly opposite.
In the video, one student begins to shout sexist exclamations from a window in the center of the dormitory’s facade before the blinds are raised in unison on roughly 40 windows in total as other members of the college join in.
Prime minister Pedro Sánchez described the images as “sexist, inexplicable, unjustifiable and repugnant.”
“It’s important that all political parties and the media say ‘no’ to these sexist behaviors and we do not take a step back in everything related to the real and effective equality between men and women,” he told reporters in Prague ahead of a meeting of European leaders.
A number of residents from the dormitory, run by the Order of Saint Augustine, have been expelled for their involvement in the sexist performance, a spokesperson for Elías Ahuja college told Efe.
The public Complutense University, one of Spain’s most prestigious, has also opened a probe into the incident.EFE
