Moscow, July 19 (EFE).- A fire at a military training camp in the Russia-occupied Crimean peninsula has forced the evacuation of more than 2,000 people from the area, the Moscow-backed governor said on Wednesday.
The blaze erupted at the training ground in the Kirovske district, Sergei Aksyonov said on his Telegram channel.
Aksyonov said the authorities “planned to temporarily evacuate residents of four settlements – this is more than 2,000 people” – from the area adjacent to the training ground.
The authorities have set up a crisis center to deal with the emergency.
They have closed the Tavrida highway, which connects Kerch on the Azov Sea with Sevastopol on the Black Sea.
Aksyonov did not give the reason that caused the fire.
Crimea has been the target of Ukrainian attacks for more than a year.
Russia on Tuesday claimed to have thwarted a Ukrainian attack with 28 drones on Crimea.
On Monday, a couple died, and their daughter suffered injuries in an attack on the Kerch bridge that links the peninsula with Russia.
Without claiming responsibility for the attack, a top Ukrainian official said that the bridge was a legitimate military target.
In October last year, five people died after an explosives-laden truck exploded on the 19-km (12 miles) long bridge, considered the longest in Europe. EFE
