Kim inspects arms factories, calls for ‘drastic boost’ in missile production

Seoul, Aug 14 (EFE).- North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un has called for a ‘drastic’ boost in missile production during inspections of the country’s major munitions factories, state media reported Monday.

The two-day inspection concluded on Saturday, a week after another visit to several arms factories in the country.

Kim “set forth an important goal to drastically boost the existing missile production capacity,” Korean Central News Agency reported on Monday.

He added that the North Korean military must be equipped with “overwhelming military force” to deal with any situation and “prevent the enemies from daring [to] use their armed forces, and surely annihilate them if they launch an attack.”

In the photos shared by KCNA, Kim can be seen driving what the North called a “newly-developed utility combat armored vehicle.”

The visits coincide with preparations by Washington and Seoul to carry out their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises later this month, which North Korea sees as a drill to invade its territory.

Tension between the North and South Korea and the United States is at one of its highest points since denuclearization negotiations with Pyongyang failed, which since last year has intensified its missile tests in line with the review of its Defense strategy. EFE
