Koh Samui, Thailand, Aug 17 (EFE).- Spain’s Daniel Sancho, in provisional detention for the murder and dismemberment of Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta, ended his Covid-19 quarantine period Thursday and can again be visited in a Thai prison by his family.
Watcharapong Boonsaior, director of the Koh Samui prison, said Sancho concluded the 10-day period of isolation he began after entering prison pending trial on Aug. 7.
“Daniel will end the quarantine (Thursday) and will meet with (staff from) the (Spanish) embassy and his family soon,” the official said.
Other prison sources said Sancho would remain in the hospital area of the penitentiary for the moment where there are about 100 people and which they describe as “somewhat larger, but not more comfortable or with more facilities than others.”
Sancho, son of Spanish actor Rodolfo Sancho, will now be able to receive visits from his relatives and Spanish embassy staff in Thailand, having only had access to his lawyers during the isolation period. Watcharapong said he had been with him these days.
“I have often come to see him and he is fine, he has no problem,” he told EFE.
Agents from the police station on the island of Phangan, neighboring Koh Samui and where the crime took place on Aug. 2, questioned him again the day before in jail in front of his lawyer, sources close to the case told EFE.
The interrogation showed that the investigation continues, despite police Deputy Director Surachate Hakparn saying Tuesday on Koh Phangan that it had concluded.
Police accuse Sancho, 29, who confessed to the crime, of the “premeditated murder” of Arrieta, 44, whom he claims he stabbed in the chest during a fight, although the victim’s autopsy is yet to be known.
Sancho and Arrieta, who allegedly met last year on Instagram, had met on Koh Phangan on Aug. 2, the day the surgeon was murdered and dismembered. His remains have been found in various locations on the island. EFE
