Jerusalem, Sep 6 (EFE).- Three people were injured Wednesday, one of them seriously, after an alleged stabbing attack by a Palestinian teenager in a tourist area of the Old City of Jerusalem, officials said.
“The knife attack occurred at the Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem,” a police spokesperson said, adding that the assailant, “a 17-year-old resident of East Jerusalem, was arrested near the scene of the attack”.
The attacker is of Palestinian origin, Israeli media reported, citing police sources.
“Three people have been injured, one of them in serious condition and the others in minor condition,” the police added.
Authorities released an image of the confiscated weapon, described by police as “a knife.” The photograph shows a large, ax-shaped butcher’s knife.
The Magen David Adom (MDA) ambulance service confirmed that its paramedics attended to “a 50-year-old man, in serious but stable condition and fully conscious, with stab wounds,” who was transferred to Hadasah Mount Scopus Hospital.
“Rushing to the scene, I came upon a man, approximately 50 years old, sitting on the sidewalk, bleeding profusely from multiple stab wounds,” commented Rafi HaCohen, an MDA paramedic, who also treated a teenager for “a superficial injury to the abdomen (…) and obvious signs of distress.”
The attack comes after a Palestinian woman attempted to stab an Israeli police officer in the Old City of Jerusalem in the eastern part of the Israeli-occupied city on Monday.
On Tuesday, Israeli forces killed a Palestinian who fired at them in the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank.
Violence has escalated significantly this year in the occupied West Bank, Jerusalem and several Israeli cities, as the region experiences its bloodiest year since the Second Intifada (2000-2005) Palestinian uprising. EFE
