Sánchez says will continue as Spanish PM ‘with even more strength’

Madrid, Apr 29 (EFE).- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Monday that he would continue to lead the government, following a period of reflection regarding his future in the position over alleged influence peddling and corruption involving his wife.

“I have decided to continue with even more strength, if possible, at the helm of the government of Spain,” Sanchez, 52, said in a televised speech, preventing a political deadlock in Spain.

The prime minister expressed his commitment to work “relentlessly and with firmness.”

Sánchez announced the decision from the Palacio de La Moncloa, the seat of the Spanish government, thus dispelling the uncertainty about the possibility of his resignation.

He said there was a “smear campaign directed against me and my family” that would not stop.

“But we can manage: The important thing is that we want to thank you for the expressions of solidarity received from all areas,” the Socialist leader said.

The announcement wraps up days of suspense in Spain amid apprehension of political uncertainty had he resigned.

The suspense was fuelled by a corruption complaint filed with a Madrid court last week by Manos Limpia (‘Clean Hands’), a self-styled “union” that was founded by a lawyer and former politician with ties to the Spanish far-right, although it insists it is politically independent.

The complaint triggered Sánchez’s shock announcement that he was suspending his public duties until Apr. 29 to “stop and reflect” on whether he wanted to remain in office given the “scandalous” and “spurious” claims being made against his wife. EFE
