At least 36 dead in 2 Pakistan bus accidents

Islamabad, Aug 25 (EFE).— At least 36 people were killed and 36 others injured in two separate bus accidents in Pakistan on Sunday, according to local media.

In the first incident, a bus traveling between Kahuta district and Rawalpindi city fell off a cliff.

Usman Gujjar, a spokesman for Punjab rescue teams, told Pakistani daily Dawn that out of 26 passengers on board, 25 died and one was injured. «The accident was due to a brake failure of the bus,” Gujjar said.

In the second accident, at least 11 people were killed and 35 injured in the southern province of Balochistan when a bus carrying pilgrims from Iran to Punjab province fell into a ditch.

Lasbela district Superintendent of Police Naveed Alam reported that “four passengers are still trapped in the bus, and a crane has been called to rescue them.”

The incidents led officials and political figures, including Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, to express their condolences on social media.

Pakistan has one of the highest road accident rates in the world due to poor road conditions, inadequate vehicles, and overcrowded public transport. Government figures estimate that around 30,000 people die in road accidents each year in the country. EFE
