She made her film debut in “Lovers and Other Strangers” (1970), but it was her role as Kay Adams in The Godfather saga (1972 and 1974) that first brought her global recognition.

Her performance in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall (1977) cemented her place in cinema history and earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, along with a Golden Globe and a BAFTA.

The film remains one of the most celebrated romantic comedies of all time.

“She had an incomparable mix of humor, intelligence, and emotional depth,” said film critic Pauline Reynolds. “Diane Keaton changed how audiences saw women on screen.”

Throughout her career, Keaton alternated between drama and comedy, starring in iconic films such as Manhattan (1979), Reds (1981), Shoot the Moon (1982), Marvin’s Room (1996), and Something’s Gotta Give (2003), which earned her another Oscar nomination.

Beyond Acting: Director, Producer, and Fashion Icon

In addition to acting, she was a director, producer, and fashion icon, known for her distinctive style, tailored suits, vests, and wide-brimmed hats, which became part of her cinematic identity.

In 2022, Keaton left her handprints and footprints in the cement outside the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, a tribute to her remarkable contribution to the film industry.

Keaton’s final screen appearances came in 2024 with the comedies Summer Camp, in which she played Nora, and Arthur’s Whisky, where she portrayed Linda.

“Diane Keaton embodied authenticity and courage,” said a statement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “Her artistry and spirit will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and actors.”
