Venezuela asks UN to investigate US ‘assassinations’

United Nations, Oct 16 (EFE). – Venezuela’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Samuel Moncada, accused the United States on Wednesday of attempting to stage a coup d’état.

Additionally, the Venezuelan Embassy to the United Nations confirmed to EFE that it sent a letter on Wednesday addressed to the Security Council regarding the lethal attacks by the US against Venezuelan boats in Caribbean waters.

On Thursday at the UN headquarters in New York, Moncada addressed the press, saying, “The US government has used secret intelligence to carry out lethal operations in this region, and its shady record of destabilization, sabotage, counterinsurgency, coup planning, and assassination is already known.”

He added that these actions seek to install governments subservient to US interests and urged the Security Council to investigate “the series of assassinations that the US has been perpetrating and determine their illegal nature.”

Although Venezuela is not a member of the Security Council, like all member states, it has the right to request, through an official letter, that a dispute of concern be included in the Council’s official agenda.

This is generally done through the permanent missions to the UN, and if further dissemination is desired, a copy can be sent to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

“On October 14, the US government carried out a new series of extrajudicial killings against civilians on a small stationary boat off the coast. This act is one more chapter in the escalation against civilian vessels since September,” continued Moncada, who did not clarify whether Venezuela would intervene in the session if granted.

The Venezuelan ambassador to the UN also said that there have already been “five attacks and 27 deaths” as part of “a military escalation involving large teams with a license to kill and impose a coup d’état in Venezuela.”

According to the diplomat, two of the latest victims were “two humble fishermen from Trinidad and Tobago,” and he emphasized that others were recognized from Colombia. He added that this issue involves the whole region.

He concluded, “But these attacks also reach a critical point when considering the statements of the Donald Trump administration that they are contemplating attacks on land, which goes against the United Nations Charter.”

Moncada added that Trump authorized the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to carry out covert operations in Venezuela and assured that he is considering launching attacks against “drug trafficking” on land, echoing a report published Wednesday by The New York Times. EFE
