Liverpool held to goalless stalemate against Chelsea

Sports Desk, Jan 21 (EFE).- Liverpool were frustrated by Chelsea in a tense 0-0 draw at Anfield on Saturday.

The goalless stalemate leaves both teams – nominal members of the so-called ‘Big Six’ Premier League clubs – languishing well below the European qualification places as a disappointing season for the two sides continued.

The match was defined by an overall lack of quality, especially in attack, although both teams showed intensity and did have chances to break the deadlock.

Kai Havertz saw an early goal ruled out

Chelsea thought they had opened the scoring in the opening minutes, but Kai Havertz’s close range effort was ruled out by VAR for offside.

Liverpool, who were fielding youngsters Harvey Elliot and Stefan Bajcetic in midfield, had new signing Cody Gakpo miss several presentable chances, while Mohammed Salah was largely kept quiet.

Chelsea’s own January transfer, the 101.3-million-euro Mykhailo Mudryk who joined this week from Shakhtar Donetsk, made a late cameo off the bench but failed to influence the match.

The draw sees Liverpool climb to 8th place and join Brentford on 29 points, while Chelsea remain in 10th, also on 29 points, but having played a game more. EFE
