US announces cybersecurity certification to help buy reliable smart devices

Washington, July 18 (EFE).- The United States will next year launch a cybersecurity certification program for companies that manufacture or sell technological products to help consumers choose devices less vulnerable to virtual attacks.

The initiative seeks to encourage US citizens to make “informed” decisions about the devices they use daily, offering them a list of products that meet cybersecurity standards, two high-ranking officials told reporters in a pre-announcement news conference.

One of the officials said that many devices, from televisions to security systems, connected to the Internet in our homes “are potentially vulnerable to cyberattacks.”

Enrollment in this program is voluntary, and more than a dozen companies, including Amazon, Google, Samsung, and Logitech, have already confirmed their participation.

The gadgets with government certification will bear a logo indicating that they comply with the government’s cybersecurity standards.

Companies interested in labeling their products with the trademark must adjust them to meet the standards.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology, an agency within the Department of Commerce, will draw the guidelines.

Among the requirements is demanding “unique and strong” passwords from its users, having data protection policies, software updates, and the ability to detect attacks.

The official said consumers wanted to buy secure technology products, and the government was creating a bridge to fulfill that desire.

In 2022, the FBI received over 800,000 reports of cyberattacks and online crimes, resulting in losses of $10.3 billion, according to a report published by the agency last March. EFE
