Washington, Aug 15 (EFE).- The death toll from fires on the Hawaiian island of Maui reached 106 on Tuesday, according to the Maui county website.

Four of the victims have been identified and their name will be released after their families have been notified, the Maui authorities said in an update posted on the website a short while earlier.

About 32 percent of the affected area has been searched, according to the update.

The Upcountry/Kula fire is 60 percent contained while the Lahaina fire is 85 percent contained.

The Pulehu/Kihei fire remains 100 percent contained with no active threats while a 1-acre fire in Kaʻanapali, near Lahaina, above Puʻukoliʻi, has been extinguished, the authorities added.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green announced the opening of the road to Lahaina from Wednesday, between 6 am to 10 pm.
“We are prioritizing the reopening of this passage to ensure access for first responders, medical professionals, residents of West Maui, and the public,” he said.
The Maui wildfires are the deadliest to hit the United States in over a century. EFE
