At least 4 dead, 48 missing due to heavy rains in central China

Shanghai, China, Aug 30 (EFE).- At least 4 people died and another 48 are missing after heavy rains lashed Jinyang county in central China’s Sichuan province last week, official newspaper China Daily reported Wednesday.

A senior provincial official said that the rains triggered flash floods at a highway construction site.

Five people with the construction company and a labor service company have been arrested for failing to report the incident or providing false information, he added.

Police investigations indicate that there were 201 people at the construction site when the floods occurred.

A total of 149 people managed to escape unharmed, the daily said.

The police are investigating the case while the search for the missing continues.

Heavy rainfall has been recorded in several parts of the country in recent days, including provinces such as northeastern Jilin, where the second-highest warning has been issued for mountain torrents -, as well as others such as Liaoning, Shandong, Shanghai, Fujian, Guangxi, Yunnan and Tibet.

In early August, China was struck by typhoon Doksuri, which left at least 33 people dead in the capital, Beijing. EFE
