Banksy officially presents a new statue in central London

London (EFE).- The elusive British artist Banksy confirmed the authorship of a statue that appeared in recent hours in central London and which featured his signature on the pedestal.

In a video published on his social media, Banksy displays some of the most important monuments in the British capital, such as Big Ben and a statue of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, before revealing his creation.

Banksy’s new work depicts a life-sized man dressed in a suit on a pedestal, wielding a flag that covers his face. He appears to be marching boldly, about to take a blind leap into the void.

«No, I don’t like it. There’s a nice statue up there, I prefer that,» says a passerby in the video published by Banksy.

The video also showed part of the installation process, which took place at night with the help of cranes and several workers. It appears authorities did not intervene or had concerns about the work in progress.

However, after the first curious onlookers noticed Banksy’s signature on the base of the statue, and before the artist’s confirmation, authorities placed a perimeter of metal fences around the statue, located on Waterloo Place avenue, where monuments to figures such as Edward VII, the nurse Florence Nightingale, or those fallen in the Crimean War stand.

The statue is located halfway between Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace.

This is the first time this year that Banksy confirms authorship of one of his works. The last one, revealed on Dec. 22 in the Bayswater neighborhood of west London, depicted two children lying down with a Christmas hat pointing to the sky. EFE
