Iran detains rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, family says

Tehran, Apr 2 (EFE).- Iranian authorities have arrested prominent human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, her daughter said Thursday, adding that the family has had no contact with her since her detention and has received no official information about her whereabouts.

“We just learned that Mom had been arrested last night while she was home alone,» Mehraveh Khandan said on Instagram.

She added that authorities seized the activist’s electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones of mom and dad.

“Mom has not been contacted so far, and we have no word from the arresting agency,» she said.

Sotoudeh gave an interview on Mar. 30 to the US-based opposition outlet IranWire, in which she criticized the Islamic Republic.

The 63-year-old lawyer has spent long periods in prison on charges such as propaganda against the regime for defending women arrested for publicly removing their veils and political opponents of Iran’s Islamic Republic.

In 2012, she was awarded the Sakharov Prize by the European Parliament in recognition of her work defending human rights.

Her husband, Reza Khandan, is currently serving a prison sentence for his activism.

Since the war launched by the United States and Israel on Feb. 28, Iran has detained thousands of people accused of spying for Israel or engaging in activities against the Islamic Republic.

Authorities have also begun executing prisoners convicted over their involvement in protests in January, with the fourth execution carried out on Thursday. EFE
