Washington, May 23 (EFE).- United States President Donald Trump reported Saturday that the final details of a peace agreement with Iran are being negotiated, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
»Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly. In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened,» Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social after calls with his allies in the Persian Gulf and with Israel.
Trump explained that he held a “very good call” with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain, as well as Pakistani Marshal Asim Munir, who is serving as a mediator with Iran.
According to the post, he negotiated with them a «memorandum of understanding on peace with Iran,» which is pending finalization.
He also held a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which “went very well.”
Trump’s announcement comes after the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Pakistani mediators stated throughout Saturday that significant progress had been made in the peace negotiations.
On Friday, Trump canceled his plans to spend the weekend at his golf course in New Jersey and returned to Washington to monitor the negotiations and meet at the White House with his national security cabinet, including US mediators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Over the past few weeks, the United States and Iran have exchanged proposals for an agreement through Pakistan, but Trump has expressed frustration that Tehran is not committing to halting uranium enrichment, and the Republican has threatened to resume military action, breaking the ceasefire in place since April.
In addition, Iran intends to charge tolls for transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global crude oil trade that Tehran blocked in retaliation for the offensive launched in February by the United States and Israel. EFE
