Lima, July 27 (EFE).- The King of Spain, Felipe VI, met on Monday with Peru’s president-elect, Keiko Fujimori, on the eve of the presidential inauguration.
“President-elect Keiko Fujimori held a meeting with His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, during which they reaffirmed the bonds of friendship between the two countries, as well as their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation,” the president-elect’s office reported on social media.
The Spanish Royal Household posted on social media pictures of the meeting at the Torre Tagle Palace, the headquarters of the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, located in Lima’s historic center.
King Felipe arrived in Lima on Monday morning and was received by Peruvian Foreign Minister Carlos Pareja and Peru’s ambassador to Spain, Alejandro Abellán García de Diego, in a brief ceremonial reception during which no statements were made.
Before the encounter with Fujimori, Felipe VI met with representatives of the Spanish community in Peru and met outgoing interim President José María Balcázar at the Government Palace.
This is the second presidential inauguration that Felipe VI has attended in Peru since he was proclaimed king, having done so five years ago in 2021 for Pedro Castillo.
Keiko Fujimori was elected president of Peru by a narrow margin of fewer than 50,000 votes; she will come to office 26 years after her father, former President Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), resigned amid a massive corruption scandal.
After he left office, Fujimori was sentenced to 25 years in prison for crimes against humanity, among other charges. EFE
