Trump grants visa for Iranian president to attend UN General Assembly in New York

Washington (EFE).- The administration of the United States president DonaldTrump announced on Thursday that it has authorized an Iranian delegation led by President Masoud Pezeshkian to travel to New York for next week’s United Nations General Assembly. The visit comes amid ongoing conflict between Washington and Tehran.

«Consistent with our host country obligations, the core delegation from the Iranian regime will be able to attend UN General Assembly High Level Week,» announced the State Department.

The official noted that 2026’s delegation will be smaller than 2025’s, when US authorities denied visas to several press team members attempting to accompany Pezeshkian to New York.

As in 2025, Iranian representatives will face strict travel and movement restrictions during their stay in the city, including a ban on purchasing luxury goods.

Pezeshkian is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Wednesday. However, the trip had remained uncertain after Tehran reported on Monday that the president had not yet received his visa.

The visit takes place more than six months into the military campaign launched by the US and Israel against Iran. The offensive has yet to achieve its goal of toppling the clerical regime, following several unsuccessful peace negotiations.

Although the US and Iran lack formal diplomatic ties, the Islamic Republic maintains accredited diplomats at the UN. Under the UN Headquarters Agreement, Washington is obligated to facilitate their entry and stay.

During the summer’s FIFA World Cup, the Iranian national team faced similar restrictions. They were required to base their training camp in Tijuana, Mexico, entering US territory only to play scheduled matches. EFE
