Beijing, Sep 27 (EFE).- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Saturday that President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington and his meeting with US President Donald Trump sent a “positive signal” of rapprochement, peaceful coexistence, and mutual benefit, describing the talks as a continuation of the leaders’ meeting in Beijing in May.
Wang said US-China relations are at a “historical juncture” and praised the close communication between the two presidents, calling it the “most valuable strategic asset” of the bilateral relationship, according to a statement released by China’s Foreign Ministry.
He also highlighted the concept of “constructive strategic stability,” a formula Xi reiterated during the visit and which Beijing has used to frame ties with Washington since Trump’s trip to China in May.
“This new positioning reflects both the reality of continued progress in bilateral relations and the shared expectation that the relationship will keep improving,” Wang said.
Trade, AI and the Middle East The foreign minister pointed to trade progress, including what he described as a reciprocal tariff reduction worth $30 billion, while warning that some forces in the US had broadened the concept of national security to politicize economic issues and restrict Chinese companies.
He urged Washington to treat Chinese businesses “fairly.”
Wang said Xi and Trump also exchanged views on international affairs and agreed to strengthen coordination in support of global peace and development.
On the Middle East, he said Xi called on all parties to choose peace, resume dialogue, and pursue a comprehensive agreement, including on the nuclear issue.
He also stressed that the “healthy, safe and orderly” development of artificial intelligence is vital to humanity’s future and said meaningful progress in the field requires cooperation between China and the US.
Separately, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Beijing respects the United States’ decision to use the term “superintelligence,” the label promoted by Trump, and called for deeper exchanges to build consensus on AI governance.
Taiwan and fentanyl
On fentanyl, Wang said the crisis did not originate in China but argued that Beijing has assisted the US by adding chemical precursors to its list of controlled substances and tightening export controls.
Addressing Taiwan, a subject omitted from the official readouts of the summit, Wang said Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to safeguarding its “national unity” and “territorial integrity” and urged the United States to handle the issue prudently.
According to both governments, the visit strengthened bilateral ties and resulted in the extension of the tariff truce until January.
Xi and Trump are expected to meet twice more before the end of the year: first in November in Shenzhen during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, and later in Miami during the G20 leaders’ summit. EFE
