San Salvador, Sep 30 (EFE).- El Salvador’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) announced on Wednesday that general elections will be held on February 28, 2027, for 582 elected offices, including president and vice president.

President Nayib Bukele will seek a third consecutive term after the constitutional amendment approved in 2025, which allowed for immediate presidential reelection and extended the term of office from five to six years.

982,682 Salvadorans living abroad, mostly in the United States, will elect six members of the Legislative Assembly out of a total of 60.

Political parties have from Oct.1 through Nov. 19 to submit their candidate registration applications.

President Bukele, who has already served two consecutive terms and was cleared to run for a third term following a controversial constitutional amendment, starts as the favorite.

New Ideas, the official party, is also expected to maintain its dominance in Congress, which currently has only three opposition representatives.

The opposition parties, the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN, left) and the Nationalist Republican Alliance (Arena, right), will also field candidates for president and vice president but have little to no chance of winning.

On July 31, 2025, the Legislative Assembly approved and ratified the constitutional amendments in a single session, without prior analysis or debate, extending the presidential term from the current five to six years, eliminating the runoff election and clearing the way for Bukele to run for a third term.

Recent polls indicate that Bukele continues to enjoy high popularity ratings, thanks to his efforts to reduce violence and gangs. However, there is an increasing demand from the population regarding economic issues. EFE
