Tehran, Oct 1 (EFE).- Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told British Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Thursday that he was «barking up the wrong tree,» after Burnham claimed there was «strong indications» of Iranian involvement in an alleged foiled terrorist attack near the British military base at Fairford.

«PM Burnham says the UK Government ‘can confirm our belief that we believe Iran to have played a part’ in the RAF Fairford incident,» Araghchi wrote on X. «You’re barking up the wrong tree.”

Araghchi maintained that Iran is convinced that «releasing supposed terrorists working for foreign states really says it all,» though he did not explain what he was referring to.

Burnham told the BBC on Wednesday that there was «strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford» in southwestern England, a military airfield jointly used by the United States.

This marks the first time the British government has openly pointed to Iran regarding this operation, although various British media outlets had already suspected Tehran’s hand in the matter since Sunday.

On Monday, Iran’s embassy in the UK categorically denied any involvement by the country in the events, after five suspects, all young British men aged 22 to 25 from London, were arrested near the base on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses and subsequently released on bail. EFE
