Mexico City (EFE).- Two 18-year-old former students carried out an attack inside a school in Torreón, in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila, killing a vice principal and injuring three others.

Local media reported that the attackers, known as “Los Cuates,” seriously injured a teacher and other students who were on school grounds.

The attack led to the immediate suspension of school activities and a massive police mobilization in the area. State and federal authorities launched an investigation.

One fatality and three injuries occurred as a result of the attack. The school’s 56-year-old assistant principal died at the scene. Three other people were injured and are receiving medical care at local hospitals.

According to various media reports, one of the injured is in serious condition and a 13-year-old student lost a hand due to his injuries.

Coahuila State Attorney General Federico Fernández Montañez confirmed the arrest of two 18-year-old brothers and former students of the school, who were turned over to authorities after being detained by staff and students at the school.

Preliminary investigations by the Prosecutor General’s office determined that there were no high-caliber explosives present at the scene. The office specified that the detainees used knives and firecrackers during the attack. Authorities traveled to the municipality to interview the suspects and determine the motive.

The incident is one of several recent acts of school violence in Mexico. In 2026 alone, there was an armed attack at a high school in Michoacán that left two teachers dead and a stabbing at the Colegio de Ciencias y Humanidades Sur in Mexico City that killed a 16-year-old student.

These events have raised alarms about security conditions and protection protocols at educational institutions in Mexico.

The incident prompted statements from educational authorities and the public sector at the national level.

The Ministry of Public Education (SEP in Spanish) condemned the violent acts committed at the Torreón school. The ministry expressed solidarity and condolences to the family of the deceased assistant principal and the school community. The ministry also announced that it would send a team of psychological and educational support specialists to the school.

The Mexican government’s Security Cabinet also commented on the case, announcing that it is coordinating with state and municipal authorities in Coahuila to investigate the incident.EFE
