Moscow (EFE).- Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Iran is making «genuine efforts» to end the conflict with the United States during a meeting with Iranian leader Masoud Pezeshkian.

«We know that Iran is making genuine efforts to end the conflict,» Putin said at the start of the meeting in Avaza, Turkmenistan.

Putin added that Tehran has put forward a new proposal to resolve the situation through peaceful means.

The Russian leader emphasized that Russia is willing to do everything in its power to help resolve the situation. He asked Pezeshkian to convey his best wishes to the Supreme Leader and wished him prosperity.

Putin, who has already condemned the killing of former Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an airstrike on several occasions, also described the assassination of Iran’s national security chief, Ali Larijani, as a tremendous mistake, as for him, Larijani was someone capable of reaching compromises.

Regarding bilateral relations, Putin noted on Thursday that despite Western sanctions, trade increased by 21% in 2025 and has continued to grow through the first seven months of 2026.

«We never walk away from the negotiating table,» the Iranian leader said, congratulating his Russian counterpart on his 74th birthday.

«We are trying to end the war as soon as possible. Everyone must respect our rights. But if they take a unilateral stance, that won’t happen in the short term,” Pezeshkian said.

He also expressed gratitude for Moscow’s stance, particularly at the United Nations, arguing that it prevented the US from adopting new measures against Tehran.

«The US is trying to impose its point of view on every country in the world,» Pezeshkian added.

On Thursday, US President Donald Trump stated that he will not launch attacks against Iran before the midterm elections on Nov. 3 and affirmed that they are holding “productive” talks with Tehran.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump insisted once again that Iran “will not have a nuclear weapon,” a slogan he regularly repeats to justify the ongoing conflict with the Islamic Republic.

The Kremlin reported that the meeting between Putin and Pezeshkian was supposed to take place on Friday, after the meeting of leaders from the post-Soviet Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Caspian Ecological Summit; however, the leaders decided to move the meeting up.

In September, Putin and Pezeshkian met in Kyrgyzstan, where members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Iran and the US.EFE
