Madrid (EFE).- The Prosecutor General’s Office considers that Spanish courts, specifically the National Court, have jurisdiction to investigate the 2021 sexual harassment and assault complaint filed by two former employees against singer Julio Iglesias in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.

According to elDiario.es, and confirmed by sources within the Prosecutor’s Office to EFE, the Attorney General’s Office maintained this position in a brief sent to National Court Judge Antonio Piña, who will decide whether to open an investigation against Iglesias after the complaint filed by the two former employees.

The aforementioned marked a reversal of the Prosecutor’s Office’s previous position in the case, which led to the dismissal of the women’s complaint in Jan. 2026 due to a «lack of jurisdiction» and the incompetence of Spanish courts.

In a Jan. 2026 ruling, the Attorney General’s Office concluded that the legal requirements for the Spanish justice system to investigate the complaint, which alleged human trafficking for forced labor and servitude, sexual assault, bodily injury, and workers’ rights violations, had not been met.

The complaint had been filed with the Prosecutor’s Office, so its refusal to investigate led to the case being dismissed.

In contrast to January’s stance, the Prosecutor’s Office informed the judge on Wednesday that the National Court has the authority to investigate the complaint against the singer.

The case stems from a journalistic investigation by El Diario and Univision News that documented the accounts of two complainants: a former domestic worker and a physical therapist. The complainants alleged that the singer sexually assaulted and abused them in 2021 when he was 77 years old.

One of the employees claimed that the incidents occurred at Julio Iglesias’s residences in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. She said that she and the other complainant were forced to undergo medical tests, including gynecological exams, pregnancy tests, and screenings for sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV.

Julio Iglesias has denied the allegations, and shortly after learning of the investigation, his defense team requested that the case be dismissed.EFE
