Spain continues to battle torrential deluge as Andalusia faces extreme flood risk

Madrid, Nov 1 (EFE).- Spain continued to grapple with relentless torrential rains on Friday, as five regions, including a red alert in Andalusia, prepare for more downpours following devastating floods that have claimed 158 lives and inflicted severe infrastructure damage.

Emergency efforts continue as an isolated depression at high altitudes severely impacts several regions, with the Valencian Community being hit the hardest.

The death toll from the flooding in Spain has risen to 158, with 155 fatalities reported in Valencia, two in Castilla-La Mancha, and one in Andalusia. Several individuals remain missing, and the emergency status is ongoing.

Significant infrastructure damage has resulted in cuts to water, electricity, and phone services, leaving thousands displaced or confined indoors due to hazardous conditions.

For Friday, the Valencian Community in the east, which endured the worst effects of the DANA weather system in recent days, remains under an “orange” alert, with ongoing rains predicted by the state meteorological agency.

The “orange” alert also encompasses large areas of Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, and Catalonia. In many places across these regions, rainfall is expected to exceed 100 liters per square meter again on Friday, according to the meteorological office.

Extremadura in the west faces a mild risk and is under a “yellow” alert.

The highest risk, denoted by the “red” alert, is concentrated along Huelva’s coast and in the Andévalo and Condado areas, where forecasts anticipate up to 140 liters per square meter of rain, with intense and prolonged rainfall expected throughout the day.

The meteorological office has issued a warning on the social media platform X, cautioning that adverse weather conditions will persist through the weekend. It advises checking road conditions before traveling and following Civil Protection recommendations.

“We want to be clear: the meteorological emergency is ongoing. The DANA is still over Spain,” the weather office posted on its X account, pinning the message as a priority alert. EFE
