Borrell travels to Ukraine to reaffirm EU support after Trump victory

Kyiv, Nov 9 (EFE).- The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, arrived in Kyiv early Saturday to reaffirm the bloc’s commitment to continue supporting Ukraine, days after the victory of Republican Donald Trump in the US presidential elections.

“Nobody knows exactly what the new administration is going to do,” Borrell told the delegation of journalists accompanying him upon arrival when asked about the possibility of Trump ending Washington’s military aid to Kyiv.

Borrell pointed out that US President Joe Biden’s administration was still in power for two months and could make decisions during that period.

He added that the objective of what will be his last visit to Ukraine before leaving the post of head of EU foreign policy in a few days was to convey to the Ukrainians the message that Europe will continue to support their country in its fight to defend itself from Russian aggression no matter what happens in the US.

The head of European diplomacy also stressed that Europe will continue to support Ukraine’s aspirations to enter the EU.

During his visit to Kyiv, Borrell will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the foreign and defense ministers, with whom he will analyze the situation on the battlefield and the sending of aid to Ukraine.

Borrell added that he also planned to travel as close as possible to the front.

Borrell, who is preparing to hand over to the former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, has been known for his support for Ukraine and has visited the country on multiple occasions. EFE
