Beirut, Nov 22 (EFE).- Lebanese authorities on Friday raised the death toll from Israel’s attacks on Lebanon’s eastern Baalbek-Hermel region the previous day to nearly 50, with dozens more wounded.

Baalbek Governor Bachir Khodr wrote on his X account that 47 people were killed and 22 wounded in a «very violent» day in several areas of the region, and added that search efforts for people missing in the rubble were ongoing, a message also echoed by the Lebanese news agency NNA.

The Ministry of Public Health estimated early Friday morning in a statement that Thursday’s attacks left 40 dead and 52 wounded.

Hours earlier, NNA had reported at least 11 deaths on Thursday in an Israeli attack on a house in the Lebanese town of Nubha, Baalbek, while Khodr said more than a dozen towns in the province were targeted.

In addition, the Israeli military launched at least four waves of attacks on Thursday in the Dahieh, considered a stronghold of the Shiite group Hezbollah in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

The new bombings occurred hours after US mediator Amos Hochstein traveled to Tel Aviv to promote the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.

Hochstein met on Thursday with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and then with Defense Minister Israel Katz to discuss a ceasefire proposal that seeks to end the war between Israel and Lebanon.

The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported Thursday the total number of victims since the outbreak of the war with Israel more than a year ago at 3,583 dead and 15,244 wounded.

On the Israeli side, 78 people have been killed in attacks launched from Lebanon, of which 47 were civilians (six of them foreigners). In addition, 46 soldiers and a researcher have died in combat in the south of the neighbouring country.

The Lebanese authorities also estimate that more than 1.2 million people have been displaced due to the violence, including around 600,000 who have crossed the border into Syria. EFE
