Brasília, (EFE). – Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro led a rally of hundreds of motorcyclists on Tuesday in Brasília.
It was his first mass event since the Supreme Court imposed a series of precautionary measures as part of his trial for an attempted coup, including a ban on using social media, wearing an electronic monitoring device, and not contacting foreign authorities.
Accompanied by his wife Michelle and several far-right lawmakers, Bolsonaro arrived at the annual Moto Week event, but did not give any speeches due to the Supreme Court’s ban.
At the rally, some motorcyclists carried signs criticising Justice Alexandre de Moraes and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as well as banners in support of United States President Donald Trump.
Trump linked the imposition of a 50% tariff on Brazil to the trial against Bolsonaro, accused of organising an attempted coup to remain in power after his electoral defeat in 2022, a process that the US leader has dismissed as a “witch hunt.”
De Moraes took precautionary measures against Bolsonaro, citing evidence of obstruction of justice related to his son Eduardo Bolsonaro’s campaign in the US, where he lobbied for sanctions against Supreme Court justices involved in his father’s trial.
Following the imposition of these measures, the former president made statements to the press that De Moraes interpreted as an affront, warning Bolsonaro that he could order his preventive detention if he engaged in similar behaviour again.
Since then, the far-right politician has kept a low profile, avoiding talking to the press and giving interviews. EFE
