Washington, (EFE). – The presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, and China, Xi Jinping, will meet on October 30 in Gyeongju, South Korea, the White House announced Thursday.
«Thursday morning, local time, President Trump will participate in a bilateral meeting with President Xi of the People’s Republic of China before departing to return home to Washington, DC, on Thursday night,» White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced.
The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ summit, the last day of Trump’s Asian tour.
The president will travel on Friday to Malaysia, then Japan, and finally South Korea.
It will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two since Trump returned to power in January. They last saw each other at the G20 in Osaka, Japan, in 2019.
The summit comes as the United States and China are negotiating a trade agreement after Trump imposed new tariffs on the Asian giant and Beijing responded with reciprocal measures.
Trump and Xi held a phone call on Sep 18 in which they approved a preliminary agreement to allow TikTok to continue operating in the United States and agreed to meet at the end of October in South Korea during APEC.
On Oct 10, Trump said there was no longer any point in meeting with Xi after China applied export restrictions on rare earths, but his administration later clarified that the summit between the two was still on. EFE
