Russia criticizes resolution against Iran by UN nuclear agency

Moscow (EFE).- Russia criticized the resolution on Friday, and Tehran reacted by canceling a cooperation agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

«We consider this provocative initiative by the Western bloc to be a serious blow to international trust in the IAEA’s safeguards system and the global nuclear non-proliferation regime,» said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

She added that there were no reasons for the IAEA Board of Governors to adopt emergency measures regarding inspections in Iran.

«We firmly believe that peaceful nuclear cooperation with Iran should be carried out under the same conditions as with other non-nuclear states that conscientiously fulfill their Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty obligations,» she said.

Tehran previously described the resolution presented by the United States, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom and approved with 19 votes in favor, three against (China, Russia, and Niger), and 12 abstentions as «anti-Iranian» and a «flagrant abuse of the international body.»

The resolution asks Iran to «fully and promptly comply with its legal obligations» since IAEA inspectors do not have access to Iranian nuclear facilities attacked in June by the US and Israel, nor information about 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%.

Iranian authorities claimed that the resolution demanding more transparency does not mention the US and Israeli bombings of seven of Iran’s main atomic facilities, which they consider to be the cause of the current situation.

In late September, the United Nations reimposed international sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program, a measure promoted by Germany, France, and the UK.

Russia has consistently supported Iran’s right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. EFE
