Tehran (EFE).- The Iranian Armed Forces threatened on Sunday to «completely» close the Strait of Hormuz and destroy United States economic interests in the region if Washington attacks Iran’s power plants.
«The Strait of Hormuz will be completely closed and will not reopen until our destroyed power plants are rebuilt,» said Ebrahim Zolfagari, spokesperson for the Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters, which coordinates the Iranian Armed Forces.
Zolfagari maintained that if Washington carries out its threat, Tehran will adopt immediate «punitive measures,» including closing this strategic route completely.
They will also attack energy and information technology infrastructure in Israel, as well as companies in the region with US participation, and power plants in countries that host US military bases.
«Everything is prepared for a great jihad to destroy all US economic interests in the region completely,» Zolfagari said.
Zolfagari made these statements in response to an ultimatum from US President Donald Trump on Saturday night, where Trump gave Iran 48 hours to «fully» open the Strait of Hormuz, warning that he would attack its power plants otherwise.
The spokesperson insisted that Iran did not start the conflict and will not initiate attacks on energy infrastructure. Still, he stressed that Iran will respond «without limits» if its facilities are attacked.
Hours earlier, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, also warned that Iran would attack and destroy vital energy and oil infrastructure throughout the region if US threats materialized.
Iran’s representative to the International Maritime Organization confirmed that the strait remains open to international navigation «except for enemies» under Tehran-established security conditions.
Following the military escalation, the Strait of Hormuz has become the epicenter of chaos, interrupting one of the world’s main energy routes and driving up the price of oil.
