Djokovic, McEnroe beat Alcaraz, Agassi in US Open exhibition match

Washington, Aug 21 (EFE).- Novak Djokovic and John McEnroe got the better of Carlos Alcaraz and Andre Agassi in an exhibition match ahead of the US Open tennis tournament in New York City on Wednesday.

The match was decided in a tie break, which Djokovic and McEnroe won 10-8.

The four tennis players have 43 individual Grand Slams among them, including 11 US Open titles.

Before the start of the match at Flushing Meadows, Agassi joked about his form and said he trusted Alcaraz to win the match.

«I can’t wait to watch him cover the whole court,” he said.

Djokovic and McEnroe, visibly in better shape than Agassi, dominated the first points of the match, going 5-0 up.

The players played with microphones so that the crowd could hear them, but Agassi was by far the most talkative of the four.

«How come you never miss?» he asked Djokovic after several backhand exchanges that the Serb won.

«Come on, Carlos, do your thing here, I’m doing all the work,» he joked with Alcaraz after losing all the initial points.

«Hit it to the other guy,» he added, referring to McEnroe.

«It’s too easy for us,» Djokovic said with a laugh, after their dominant start.

Alcaraz and his partner took the rest of the match a little more seriously, getting closer to 9-8 on the scoreboard, but again it was Agassi who gave it away.

Alcaraz wasn’t even born when Agassi and McEnroe won their Grand Slams.

It was also Djokovic’s first match following his Olympic gold medal after defeating Alcaraz.

“I told Carlos at the net when we finished the final that I was very grateful to him for letting me win the gold. He’s probably going to have like three gold medals before he retires,” Djokovic said after the match.

The US Open draw will take place on Thursday, with Italian Jannik Sinner as the top seed, Djokovic second, and Alcaraz third. EFE
