Modi calls for peace, stability in Eurasia, Middle East

New Delhi, Oct 11 (EFE).- India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called for the restoration of peace and stability in Eurasia and the Middle East.

«There is a collective desire for the restoration of peace and stability in regions such as Eurasia and the Middle East as soon as possible,» Modi said during his address at the 19th East Asia Summit, taking place in Laos.

«It is essential to respect sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international laws. With a humanitarian perspective, we must place a strong emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy,» he added, assuring that «India will continue to make every effort to contribute in this direction.»

The summit is being attended by the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and eight external partners, including India.

«The most negatively affected countries, due to ongoing conflicts in various parts of the world, are those from the Global South,» the Indian leader said.

Modi has repeatedly called for a resolution of both conflicts through dialogue, although he has refrained from condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine or the attacks in the Middle East, limiting himself in the latter case to calling for moderation and lamenting the deaths of civilians.

Last week, the Indian prime minister spoke on telephone with his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, and urged him to prevent an escalation in the region.

Relations between the two countries are fluid, although India has historically supported the Palestinian cause. EFE
