Trump, Milei praise each other at conservative forum gala at Mar-a-Lago

Miami, Nov 14 (EFE).- Argentina’s President Javier Milei and United States president-elect Donald Trump congratulated each other on Thursday during speeches at a conservative forum gala held at Mar-a-Lago, Florida.

Milei is the first foreign leader to meet with Trump since his election victory on Nov. 5.

«Javier, I’d like to congratulate you on the job you’ve done for Argentina,» said Trump at the America First Policy Institute gala. “The job you’ve done is incredible. Make Argentina great again., you know, MAGA, he’s a MAGA person. And you know, he’s doing that.”

«I think your numbers are working also. You have done a fantastic job in a very short period of time,» he added.

Earlier, Milei had praised the Republican for «the greatest political comeback in history, defying the entire political establishment, even at the risk of his own life,» he said in reference to two attempted assassinations during the campaign.

“Today the winds of freedom are blowing much stronger,” Milei said, adding that Trump’s victory was “proof positive that the forces of heaven are on our side.”

The libertarian president also met during the gala with billionaire Elon Musk, whom he also congratulated on his appointment to the US’ new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and in his address thanked him for his work promoting free speech.

Milei spoke with Trump during the gala, which was attended by hundreds of guests, although they did not hold a bilateral meeting.

Before leaving for Florida, Milei said his intention is to seek a Free Trade Agreement with the US and to ensure that Argentina has better conditions in its relationship with the International Monetary Fund.

He also said that Trump confessed to him in a telephone conversation that the Argentinian is his «favorite president,” and that together they will make both the US and Argentina «greater.»

Before the event, Milei held private meetings with American businessmen in Miami.

Milei met Trump at an informal meeting on the margins of the Conservative Political Action Conference in February, when they greeted each other cordially and both expressed good wishes for their respective political plans, while the Argentinian acknowledged his admiration for the Republican.

His visit to the US will be short, because he will receive the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, in Buenos Aires over the weekend, then travel to Brazil to participate in the G20 summit and then, back in the Argentine capital, receive Italian Prime Minister, Georgia Meloni. EFE
