Riyadh, July 28 (EFE).- Saudi Arabia Friday said it summoned the Danish charge d’affaires in Riyadh over the recent public burning of the Quran.

A Saudi foreign ministry statement said that the kingdom handed the Danish diplomat a protest note, calling for an end to such “disgraceful acts that violate all religious teachings, laws and international norms.”

Several Muslim countries have lodged diplomatic protests with Scandinavian countries where far-right activists carried out public burnings of Islam’s holy book over the past week in front of the embassies of Islamic nations.

On Tuesday, some anti-Islam activists set fire to a copy of the Quran in front of the Egyptian embassy in Copenhagen. That marked the third such incident in Denmark in less than a week, following similar incidents in Sweden.

Egypt summoned the Danish ambassador and called “for the authorities in Denmark, and other countries that have witnessed similar events, to take concrete actions to stop these unfortunate incidents once and for all.”

Last week, the incidents led to Iraqi protesters setting fire to the Swedish mission in Baghdad and unsuccessfully trying to storm the Danish one.

The 56-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will meet virtually on Monday in response to the burning of the holy book in Sweden and Denmark. EFE
