Egypt resumes talks with Hamas and Islamic Jihad

Cairo, Feb 8 (EFE). – Egyptian officials met separately in Cairo on Thursday with representatives of Hamas and Islamic Jihad to agree on the resumption of talks aimed at reaching a unified Palestinian position to negotiate a ceasefire with Israel, Egyptian security sources told EFE.

According to these sources, who requested anonymity, officials of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service met separately in Cairo on Thursday with representatives of the Hamas delegation and of the Islamic Jihad movement “to reach a unified position regarding the demands of the Palestinian resistance to implement a truce with Israel”.

A later trilateral session will be held with both factions.

Egyptian intelligence officials sought to “bring the points of view closer” because “there is a wide gap between the demands of Hamas and Jihad.

On Tuesday, Qatar announced a proposed agreement for the release of hostages held captive in Gaza and a ceasefire that Hamas had agreed to, but Israel rejected it, so Cairo and Doha, the main mediators, decided to convene this new round of negotiations.

Hamas presented a ceasefire proposal that would include three phases for the release of hostages in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners, the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza, and the end of its military offensive.

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in Israel on Wednesday that the Hamas proposal had some unacceptable points, but left room for negotiation. EFE
