US says no troops to fight in Ukraine after Macron’s remarks

Washington, Feb 27 (EFE).- The United States stated on Tuesday that it will not send troops to Ukraine to fight Russia and said the best way to support the country is for the House of Representatives to approve the additional aid package for Kyiv.

“President Joe Biden has been clear that the US will not send troops to fight in Ukraine,” Adrienne Watson, National Security Council spokesperson, told EFE.

Aid to Ukraine has stalled in the US Congress, with House Republican leader Mike Johnson refusing to bring it to a vote.

The $95 billion bill, which includes aid to Israel and Taiwan, passed the Senate earlier this month with the support of Democrats, who hold a majority, and about 20 Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

For months, conservatives have conditioned aid to Ukraine on passing legislation strengthening the border with Mexico and weakening asylum systems.

However, when a bipartisan group of senators introduced such legislation, they refused to consider it.

“We have said over and over again that Ukraine matters,” Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder said on Tuesday.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion two years ago, he told a news conference, the US has worked “very hard” to ensure that Ukraine receives security assistance “as quickly as possible.”

“It’s not just a US effort, it’s an international effort (…) But nothing gets done without funding,” he concluded.

French president Macron said on Monday that sending troops to Ukraine should not be ruled out at the end of a summit on Ukraine attended by more than 20 European leaders.

Berlin, Madrid, Rome, and NATO, as well as Washington and Ottawa, among other members of the international community don’t support Macron’s remarks. EFE
