Kyiv, Apr 17 (EFE).- A Russian missile attack against the city of Chernihiv, located near the border with Belarus in northern Ukraine, killed at least ten civilians early Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
“A rescue operation is underway after a Russian missile attack. People under the rubble. As of this time, it is known about 20 injured and 10 dead. My condolences to family and friends,” Zelenskyy said on Telegram.
“Unfortunately, the death toll may rise,” he added.
Earlier, the city’s acting mayor Oleksandr Lomako said that hospitals were attending to the injured while places are being identified to set up temporary housing for the affected.
In a Telegram post, the head of the Chernihiv regional military administration, Vyacheslav Chaus, said that Russia had launched three missiles near the city’s center.
Chaus said that the attack had damaged civil infrastructure buildings and dozens of vehicles.
Before the large-scale Russian invasion, Chernihiv had about 300,000 inhabitants.
The city was besieged by Russian troops early in the war when Russia launched an offensive on northern Ukraine from Belarus. EFE
