UK approves bill to send migrants to Rwanda

London, Apr 23 (EFE).- The British parliament has finally approved Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s controversial bill that enables the government to send migrants in the United Kingdom to Rwanda.

The Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill was approved after a heated discussion in the two chambers of the parliament.

The bill was passed late Monday after the House of Lords, the upper house, assented to it following several rounds of ping-pong over the legislation with the House of Commons.

The bill will be sent to King Charles III for royal assent on Tuesday.

On Monday, Sunak detailed his government’s plans to deport the asylum seekers who may have entered British territory by irregular means to Rwanda.

The first flight would take off in 10 to 12 weeks, he said.

The bill considers the African nation a “safe country” for asylum seekers to be transferred to.

Sunak’s Conservative Party was persistent in its Rwanda plan.

“Start the flights. Stop the boats. That’s what this bill delivers,” Sunak said, referring to asylum seekers who cross the English Channel on small boats to enter the UK. EFE
