Japan imposes trade curbs on Chinese, Indian firms for supporting Ukraine war

Tokyo, June 21 (EFE).- Japan on Friday imposed trade restrictions against firms in China, India, Belarus, Kazakhstan, the United Arab Emirates, and Uzbekistan over their alleged support for Russia’s war on Ukraine.

The Japanese government alleged that the new sanctions on 11 firms were helping Russia circumvent punitive measures imposed by the international community for its invasion of Ukraine.

The sanctions come after Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida indicated during the G7 leaders’ summit held in Italy that his government was preparing a new package of measures aimed at third countries that directly or indirectly support indirectly to Russia.

The G7 criticized the export of goods with potential military use to Russia through third countries and expressed its willingness to take measures to cut off these trade routes that allow Moscow to evade international sanctions.

Government spokesperson Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters that Japan would keep collaborating with the G7 and other international community to “ensure the effectiveness of sanctions on Russia.”

“These are not sanctions against specific countries, but rather entities involved in evading Russian sanctions,” the spokesperson said.

The new Japanese sanctions include freezing the assets of individuals, companies, and entities from the specified countries, including Russia. They also restrict payments and capital transactions and prohibit exports to the listed firms. EFE
