Heavy rains paralyze India’s financial capital, lead to school closures

New Delhi, July 8 (EFE).- Incessant monsoon rains in Mumbai since the weekend paralyzed activity in the western Indian city on Monday, leading to the closure of schools and delays in air and rail traffic.

Much of India’s financial capital woke up flooded on Monday after a night in which some weather stations recorded more than 300 millimeters of rainfall, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on X.

The agency urged the over 25 million inhabitants not to leave their homes unless necessary and declared a holiday for all schools and universities in the city.

Heavy rains caused disruptions in the city’s suburban train services, BMC added, while dozens of planes experienced delays of several hours at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, according to the tracking platform Flightradar24.

Images released by local news agency PTI show roads completely submerged under water, which reaches up to the knees of residents in some neighborhoods in the north of the city and has caused the closure of several metro stations.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall on Monday and maintained the orange alert warning for heavy showers for the city.

The monsoon or rainy season in India and other South Asian countries falls between May and September and causes significant personal and material damage.

More than 50 people have died due to the rains in the northeastern Indian state of Assam since the end of May.

On Monday, the IMD issued the highest red alert for heavy rainfall in the northern Uttarakhand state. EFE
