At least 10 dead in tropical storm sweeping Philippines

Bangkok, Sep 3 (EFE).- At least 10 people have died and another 10 injured as a result of a tropical storm hitting the north of the Philippines, sweeping through the island of Luzon on its way towards China, authorities reported on Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Yagi, locally named Enteng, caused serious flooding and landslides on Luzon with heavy rains and sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 105 kph, the meteorological department.

In its morning update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported 10 dead and 10 injured, while more than 147,000 people have been affected by the floods, of which some 38,000 have been housed in temporary shelters.

The storm also caused the cancellation of dozens of domestic flights, said the Manila Airport Authority.

Authorities canceled school classes on Monday and Tuesday in metropolitan Manila and in several surrounding provinces due to the impact of the storm.

The Philippines experiences about 20 typhoons and tropical storms a year, especially during the monsoon season, which usually begins in June and ends in November or December.

In July, more than 30 people died in the Philippines due to the passage of Typhoon Gaemi. EFE
