Berlin, Oct 2 (EFE).- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday strongly condemned the previous days’ attack on Israel by Iran, while renewing their call for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.
At a meeting in the German capital, where Macron is taking part in the second Berlin Global Dialogue, the two leaders “strongly condemned the Iranian missile attacks against Israel,” the German Chancellery said in a statement.

Both Scholz and Macron had already separately condemned Iran’s missile attack against Israel, with the French president condemning the Islamic Republic “with the utmost firmness” while the German leader said “Iran risks setting the whole region on fire”.
The Elysée has said that France had mobilized its “military assets in the Middle East to confront the Iranian threat”.
Scholz and Macron also repeated their call for a ceasefire in Lebanon and in Gaza, and the implementation of a United Nations’ resolution that was adopted unanimously in 2006 and aims to put an end to hostilities between the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and Israel based on the creation of a buffer zone.
German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock was due to meet with her counterparts from the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Italy on Wednesday afternoon, with discussions expected to focus on the Middle East, including the situation in Lebanon.
France has been highly critical of Israel’s bombing in Lebanon, while Germany’s foreign spokesman, when asked what Berlin had to say about Israel’s incursion into the south of the neighboring country, stressed that Israel has the right to defend itself against Hezbollah. EFE
