Ouagadougou, Dec 6 (EFE).- The military junta ruling Burkina Faso on Friday dismissed the prime minister, Apollinaire Kyélem de Tambèla and dissolved the government, following a decree issued by Interim President Ibrahim Traoré.
The decree states that “the functions of the prime minister are terminated” and that “the government is dissolved” without further explanation.
Tambéla, a lawyer, was appointed to the post in October 2022, shortly after the coup led by Traoré, who is the world’s youngest head of state at 36 years old.
Burkina Faso suffered two coups in 2022: one on Jan. 24, led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, and another on Sep. 30, led by Traoré.
On both occasions, the military seized power in response to popular and military discontent over jihadist attacks.
In October 2022, during a first national dialogue, the coup leaders adopted a charter establishing a transitional period that was supposed to end on July 1, 2024.
But in May, the military junta extended its transitional power for five more years.
Since 2015, several jihadist groups linked to both al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have established themselves in Burkina Faso, controlling many areas and constantly attacking the population.
Thousands of people have been killed in numerous attacks and more than two million have been forced to flee their homes. EFE
