US cancels next round of bilateral talks with Russia, says Moscow

Moscow, June 16 (EFE).- The United States canceled the next round of bilateral negotiations with Russia aimed at easing relations between the two countries, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Monday.

Zakharova, in a statement on the foreign ministry website, said the talks were canceled at the initiative of the US negotiators, adding that this break would not be a long one.

Russia and the US have held two rounds of bilateral consultations in the Turkish city of Istanbul in February and April this year, which were led by Russian Ambassador to Washington, Alexandr Darchiev, and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Sonata Coulter.

In these meetings, both parties confirmed the existence of serious irritants in their bilateral relations inherited from the previous US administration, which needed to be removed to strengthen trust and improve ties.

Russia and the US also held two other meetings for normalization of ties in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

These meetings did not address the issue of the war in Ukraine and the parties focused on ironing out the differences between Moscow and Washington. EFE
