Trump to meet Putin in Alaska on August 15 to discuss Ukraine war

Washington (EFE).- United States President Donald Trump announced Friday that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Aug. 15 in Alaska to discuss a possible end to the war in Ukraine.

“The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska. ,” Trump wrote on his official Truth Social account.

The summit will mark the first meeting between Putin and US President Trump since their 2021 talks with former United States President Joe Biden in Geneva.

Trump last met Putin in Helsinki in 2018.

Trump’s proposal to include a “territorial exchange” as part of a potential peace agreement has drawn sharp criticism from Kyiv and several European capitals.

Ukrainian officials have repeatedly stressed they will not accept the cession of areas currently under Russian control.

In recent days, Trump has also pushed new economic pressure on Moscow, including tariffs targeting countries such as India that purchase Russian oil.

Analysts say these moves aim to strengthen his leverage ahead of the meeting with Putin, though the effectiveness of the strategy remains uncertain.

The Kremlin has described the upcoming summit as “an opportunity for direct dialogue” and said Moscow will seek security guarantees and international recognition of the territories it holds in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokespersons have not confirmed whether representatives from Ukraine or third-party mediators will participate in the Alaska talks.

“Our priority is to ensure Russia’s security and protect the interests of the people in the territories under our control,” a Russian official told state media.

The Alaska meeting is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched diplomatic events of the year, with potential consequences far beyond the battlefield in Ukraine.

The outcome could influence the broader geopolitical balance between Washington and Moscow, as well as relations with European allies and China.

While no formal agenda has been released, US officials have indicated that the talks will focus on “steps toward de-escalation” and possible frameworks for negotiations. EFE
