Spanish PM announces ship dispatch to support Global Sumud flotilla carrying aid for Gaza

United Nations, Sep 24 (EFE). – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Wednesday in New York that a ship will be sent to support the Global Sumud flotilla carrying aid to the Gaza Strip, following several attacks.

According to Navy sources, the ship being deployed is the BAM (Maritime Action Ship) “Furor.”

Sánchez said, during a press conference at the Spanish diplomatic mission to the United Nations, the patrol vessel will set sail from Cartagena, Murcia, to assist the flotilla or “carry out a rescue” if necessary.

Sánchez recalled that the flotilla “represents 45 countries” and will transport food to the population to express the solidarity of a large majority of the world’s nations.

He also stressed that the Spanish navy ship is being sent “so that they can be rescued in case of difficulty,” although he hopes it won’t be necessary.

He also insisted that the Spaniards present in the flotilla “express the solidarity of millions and millions of people worldwide.”

On Wednesday, the humanitarian flotilla reported facing “explosions, swarms of drones, and communication interference” on Tuesday, prompting urgent concerns for the crew’s safety and forcing them to sail under “alert.”

Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares had previously warned Israel that Spain would respond to any act that “violates” the Sumud Flotilla’s freedom of movement, expression, and adherence to international law as it heads to Gaza with humanitarian aid.

“Attacks on the Global Sumud Flotilla are unacceptable. I categorically reject them and demand they cease,” Albares said in a statement released by the Spanish Foreign Ministry shortly after the attack became known. EFE
