La Paz (EFE).- The prosecutor’s office of Tarija, southern Bolivia, filed on Tuesday the formal accusation against former President Evo Morales (2006-2019) for aggravated human trafficking.
The Departmental Prosecutor of Tarija, Sandra Gutiérrez, stated that the indictment resulted from a thorough analysis of all the evidence and reports collected during the investigation into the case.
“We will wait for the criminal procedure to run its course, and once the judge has analysed all the evidence, the case will be sent to the relevant court to set a date for the trial,” Gutiérrez explained at a press conference.
According to the case documents, Morales is accused of fathering a child with a 15-year-old girl whose parents had enrolled her in a youth organization close to the then president in exchange for political favours.
Idelsa P., the girl’s mother, was also indicted on Tuesday for aggravated human trafficking.
In October 2024, Prosecutor Gutiérrez issued an arrest warrant for the former president, which was later endorsed by a Tarija court. The warrant was issued for allegedly having a child with an underage girl in 2016, when he was president.
In early 2025, a judicial court declared Morales in absentia after the politician failed to appear in court on two occasions, citing illness. This was at a hearing to resolve the accusation against him of aggravated human trafficking.
Supporters of the former president blocked roads in 2024 to prevent his arrest, and he has not left his political and trade union stronghold in Cochabamba since October, where he remains under the protection of hundreds of his allies. EFE
