Trump, Takaichi agree to take Japan-US relationship into ‘new golden age’

Tokyo (EFE).- Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and US President Donald Trump pledged Tuesday in Tokyo to bring their alliance into a “new golden age” with the signing of agreements and trade negotiations.”

I would like to realize a new golden age of Japan-US alliance, where both Japan and the United States will become stronger and also more prosperous,” said Takaichi sitting with Trump at Akasaka State Guest House, in her first face-to-face meeting with the US president since she came to power a week ago.

Trump, who arrived in Tokyo on Monday after a visit to Malaysia, again congratulated the Japanese prime minister and assured that his administration is “excited” about this new chapter with Tokyo.

“We’re going to do tremendous trade together, I think, more than ever before, just signing a new deal, and it’s a very fair deal,” the president declared, also highlighting a recent arms order from Japan “for a very large amount of new military equipment.”

“You know that we make the best military equipment in the world — the jets, the missiles and everything else — and hopefully we don’t have to use them very much, if at all. But we appreciate that order, and we very much appreciate the trade,” the US president added.

Trump also said he has always had “great love of Japan and a great respect of Japan, and I will say that this will be a relationship that will be stronger than ever before.”

“I want to just let you know anytime you have any question, any doubt, anything you want, any favors you need, anything I can do to help Japan, we will be there,” he added.

The conservative Japanese prime minister praised Trump’s work on the ceasefire deal between Thailand and Cambodia, as well as the “unprecedented historic achievement” in the Middle East, she said.”

As a matter of fact, [late] Prime Minister [Shinzo] Abe often told me about your dynamic diplomacy,” Takaichi said, highlighting the friendship he and Trump displayed during the first term of the Republican, who said he was “saddened” by his assassination.

After initial comments open to the press, Takaichi and Trump proceeded to speak privately and later signed two documents: one on the plan for a new “golden age” between the two countries and the implementation of the terms of their trade agreement, and another on collaboration in the supply of rare earths and critical minerals.
